The JUCC is committed to contributing our expertise to the furtherance of IT development and application of IT for higher education as well as the advancement of IT infrastructure and technology. Over the years, the JUCC has made valuable contributions in extending its professional services to the education community beyond higher education sector.
The JUCC was the pioneer in setting up Internet for all academic institutions in Hong Kong. It was also the pioneer administrator of the .hk Internet domain name. We introduced and administered the registration and assignment of Internet domain names ending with .com.hk, .org.hk, .gov.hk, .edu.hk and .net.hk for a decade starting from 1992. A landmark decision was made by the JUCC with the help and agreement of the HKSAR Government to transfer the management of the “.hk” domain name administration to a new organisation, the HKIRC, in 2002.
After the transfer, the JUCC continues its role in providing registration service for .edu.hk second-level domain and has appointed HKDNR to carry out the operations of the .edu.hk registration since January 2002. Educational institutions and schools which will like to register or renew their .edu.hk domain names, please visit HKDNR’s website https://www.hkdnr.hk/ or send your enquiries to email@example.com.
eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other eduroam participating institutions.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University joined eduroam as the first higher education institution in Hong Kong. In 2012, the JUCC took up the official role of eduroam roaming operator for Hong Kong academic community and assumes the responsibility to operate the eduroam service for Hong Kong, determine the eligibility of eduroam Identity Providers (IdP), and to promote good practice of Wi-Fi collaborations among eduroam.hk members.
The roaming services facilitated academic exchange activities within Hong Kong and at the international level. JUCC’s eduroam.hk service helps to enable travelling academics of JUCC member institutions and other eduroam.hk educational members to connect freely in the global Wi-Fi university community and vice versa.
